Gemma’s Kitchen

Client’s Brief

Gemma had recently moved into a beautiful church conversion and was looking to update the black gloss kitchen installed by the previous owners. The existing kitchen felt dark and didn’t reflect the aesthetic she envisioned. Gemma wanted the space to feel lighter and better suited to the character of the church architecture. While the overall layout was to remain largely the same, the kitchen lacked adequate worktop space, and she also wanted a dedicated area to house her small appliances.

Design Ideas and Execution

To brighten the space, we chose a porcelain door paired with a Calacatta Oro quartz worktop, which immediately made the kitchen feel lighter and more open. The door style selected was the timeless Mornington Shaker, a perfect complement to the church’s architectural features.

To further elevate the design, we created a bespoke overmantel above the hob area, adding character and a focal point to the room. To address the lack of worktop space, we made use of the right-side wall by incorporating a dresser unit. This not only provided additional surface area but also cleverly concealed Gemma’s coffee machine and built-in microwave, keeping the space functional yet streamlined.

Designer’s Reflection

Gemma’s kitchen is truly stunning. Every design detail has been thoughtfully considered — from the striking black knurled handles to the antique mirror splashback behind the hob. One of my favourite elements is the waterfall sides on the island; they give it a solid, sculptural presence that really anchors the space.
